Nevel Oy's biogas plant project progresses in Mussalo, Kotka

Nevel Oy’s biogas plant project in the Mussalo port area of Kotka is progressing rapidly. On 21 May 2025, the Southern Finland Regional State Administrative Agency (AVI) granted the plant an environmental permit for substantial changes to its operations. The decision concerns, among other things, the quality and quantity of waste to be received, the plant’s technology and processes, and the monitoring of operations.

– We are delighted that the environmental permit has now been approved. It is a concrete step on our journey towards local cooperation to start side-stream processing operations in Kotka,” says Hanna Viita, Nevel’s Sustainability Manager.

The project, which has been granted €4.7 million in energy aid from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, is a major investment that will support the region’s green transition and the development of the port of Mussalo as a hub for sustainable industry.

– The biogas plant will bring added value to the whole region. It will support the development of the circular economy, strengthen Mussalo’s industrial infrastructure and serve as a concrete example of how investing in clean energy creates new opportunities,” says Jarkko Harjula, Senior Advisor at Cursor.
