Vaalimaa is the busiest and largest border crossing point on Finland’s eastern border, with almost three million border crossings made every year. Vaalimaa is also the European Union’s most important point for directly crossing the border from a Member State into Russia. The E18 motorway connects Helsinki to Vaalimaa. On the Russian side, a motorway is being constructed from St Petersburg to the Torfyanovka border crossing point, which is located across the border from Vaalimaa.
Next to the border crossing point, an area of over 27 ha has been allocated in the local plan to services, including a gross floor area of 31,000 m2 earmarked for large retail premises. The area is perfectly suited for trade activities and tourism services. Zsar Outlet Village – the first of its kind in Finland – is located in Vaalimaa. A shopping centre that also includes grocery stores and has a gross floor area of more than 18,000 m2 is being built in the area. The plots on offer in the area are suited for both commercial activities and services.
